Take action this World Habitat Day
The United Nations has established World Habitat Day as a yearly recognition of the basic, human need for adequate shelter. It is a day to call attention to the universal right to a safe place to live. It is a day of action around the world, starting in your community... starting with you! Inadequate housing and disasters
Disasters are a fact of life. But for a family already living in precarious housing conditions, they pose an even greater risk. This World Habitat Day, help us call attention to the tremendous need to reduce the vulnerabilities that families living in inadequate housing face against any type of disaster - whether natural, economic or political. More than 18 months after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, there is still an astounding level of need. Some 600,000 people continue to reside in emergency tent camps--twice the population of the city of San José, Costa Rica. When a family lives on less than US$2 a day, with a worn piece of tarp for a roof and in complete vulnerability, any amount you can give helps. Take action and donate today.
Housing Forums across the region
Across Latin America and the Caribbean, Habitat organizations are hosting Housing Forums and other events to raise awareness about the housing need in their country. Many of these forums will be transmitted live, and we'll be promoting discussion in our social networks throughout the month of October. Follow Habitat for Humanity Latin America and the Caribbean Facebook and Twitter to stay posted! Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Haiti
The culmination of World Habitat Day activities is Habitat for Humanity's most recognized annual event, the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, which will take place from November 5 to the 12, 2011, in Haiti. Volunteers who have built in solidarity with others and seen the daily reality faced by Haitian families say that it is a life-changing experience. Leading up to the Carter Work Project, we will be sharing on our Blog the stories of the volunteers, staff and families who have lived this experience.
